Feeding Your Demons
By: Allione, Tsultrim
Published by: Little, Brown and Company

Tsultrim Allione brings an eleventh-century Tibetan woman's practice to the West for the first time with FEEDING YOUR DEMONS, an accessible and effective approach for dealing with negative emotions, fears, illness, and self-defeating patterns. Allione-one of only a few female Buddhist leaders in this country and comparable in American religious life to Pema Chodron-bridges this ancient Eastern practice with today's Western psyche. She explains that if we fight our demons, they only grow stronger. But if we feed them, nurture them, we can free ourselves from the battle. Through the clearly articulated practice outlined in FEEDING YOUR DEMONS, we can learn to overcome any obstacle and achieve freedom and inner peace. more...

The Gnostics
By: Martin, Sean
Published by: Pocket Essentials

Gnosticism - derived from the Greek word gnosis, to know - is the name given to various religious schools that proliferated in the first centuries after Christ and, at one time, it almost became the dominant form of Christianity. Yet some Gnostic beliefs derive from the older Mystery traditions of Greece and Rome, and the various Gnostic schools came to be branded as heretical by the emerging Christian church. Indeed, although some Gnostic beliefs are close to mainstream Christianity Gnosticism also held that the world is imperfect as it was created by an evil god who was constantly at war with the true, good God; that Christ and Satan were brothers; that reincarnation exists; and that women were the equal of men As a result, the Gnostics held the Feminine Aspect of God - whom they addressed as Sophia, or Wisdom - in very high regard. They also stressed that we each have a spark of the Divine inside us which, when recognised and developed, will ultimately liberate us from the prison of the material world. Although largely stamped out by the Church by the sixth century, Gnosticism survived underground through groups such as the Bogomils and the Cathars, and influenced the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the psychologist Carl Jung, the Existentialists, the New Age movement and writers as diverse as William Blake, W.B. Yeats, Albert Camus and Philip K. Dick. In this book, Sean Martin recounts the long and diverse history of Gnosticism, and argues for its continued relevance today. more...

The Hidden Parables
By: Michael, Todd
Published by: Jeremy P. Tarcher

The author of "The Twelve Conditions of a Miracle" brings a fresh and radical interpretation to Christ's thirty-two parables, revealing within them a practical blueprint for self-development. "The Hidden Parables" is a complete retranslation of the parables used by Jesus of Nazareth to illustrate critical lessons about the nature of reality. Its simple, to-the-point analysis illuminates cosmological concepts, rendering them surprisingly accessible and practical, and highlights the actual techniques for self-development found in the words of Christ. In "The Hidden Parables," the thirty-two enigmatic parables spoken by Christ are meticulously retranslated retaining the expressiveness of the original Greek and giving the reader a literal understanding of the words of Christ. Michael's reconsideration unveils a hidden layer of meaning, which shows that the parables are not a random collection of stories, but a unified system of knowledge. This integrated system of knowledge describes how to use the spiritual law of thought forms-or controlled intentions--to create more beneficial, more miraculous circumstances in our personal lives. The information it presents is clear and very useful. Moreover, this system bears an uncanny symmetry with many of today's leading-edge ideas from quantum physics. In "The Hidden Parables," those aspects of Christ's words that are sometimes considered confounding are freshly revealed for their penetrating insights about human existence and the hands-on methodology the insights provide for greater self-understanding and for leading a more fulfilling life. more...

The House of the Seven Gables
By: MobileReference
Published by: MobileReference.com

The House of the Seven Gables is a novel written in 1851 by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. The novel begins: Halfway down a by-street of one of our New England towns stands a rusty wooden house, with seven acutely peaked gables, facing towards various points of the compass, and a huge, clustered chimney in the midst. The street is Pyncheon Street; the house is the old Pyncheon House; and an elm-tree, of wide circumference, rooted before the door, is familiar to every town-born child by the title of the Pyncheon Elm. The Pyncheon family actually existed and were ancestors of American novelist Thomas Pynchon. The House of the Seven Gables likely bears no relation to the novel, as its seven-gabled state was unknown to Hawthorne and he often stated that it was a work of complete fiction based on no particular house. This seven gabled house which has been suggested to be Hawthorne''s inspiration is a museum in Salem, Massachusetts that was founded to fund an accompanying settlement house. — Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Anyone who is engaged in a creative pursuit will no doubt identify with these wonderful cartoons by award-winning artist Elizabeth Cameron of creative wannabes doing everything except actually getting down to work. "For most people creativity is a serious business," says Julia Cameron. "They forget the telling phrase 'the play of ideas' and think that they need to knuckle down and work more. Often, the reverse is true. They need to play." Ultimately, the characters in this book show us how we can turn our procrastination into play and our play into great work. With this delightful volume, Julia Cameron once again hits the nail on the head on the subject of creativity. more...

The Inner West
By: Kinney, Jay
Published by: Tarcher

The founder of the influential Gnosis magazine collects essays by some of today's finest spiritual writers to explore the West's magical and esoteric traditions. Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry, Gnosticism, The Knights Templar . . . Even before the success of The Da Vinci Code, many readers knew of these and other aspects of Western esoterica. But few understand their true meaning. In The Inner West, more than twenty essays by seventeen leading authors shine a light on some of the most mysterious and closely held aspects of the Western tradition. Its authors bring to life the symbolist and occult philosophies that populate the history and beliefs of the Western way. These same philosophies-which include variants of Christian and Jewish mysticism, and the teachings of figures like Rudolf Steiner and G. I. Gurdjieff-can present a deep and different spiritual path for today's seekers. Spiritual seekers have often looked to the East for inspiration and guidance. Yet increasing numbers of people are discovering that many helpful wisdom traditions have existed right here in the West. With the Kabbalah and Tarot cards more popular than ever, and alternative spirituality from Wicca to Sufism gaining a new audience, The Inner West is a timely book for this expanding audience. more...
