Nanocrystalline Materials
By: Gusev, A.I.; Rempel, Andrej A.
Published by: Cambridge International Science Publishing

In the monograph, the authors discuss systematically the current state of investigations into nanocrystalline materials. The experimental results on the effect of the nanocrystalline state on the microstructure and the mechanical, thermophysical, optical, and magnetic properties of metals, alloys and solid-phase compounds are generalised. Special attention is given to the main methods of production of isolated nanoparticles, ultrafine powders and dense nanocrystalline materials. more...

NanoCulture
By: Hayles, N. Katherine (ed.)
Published by: Intellect

Nano denotes a billionth; a nanometer is a billionth of a meter. New instrumentation and techniques have for the first time made possible materials research and engineering at this level, the scale of individual molecules and atoms. Extraordinary visions of material abundance, unprecedented materials, and powerful engineering capabilities have marked the arrival of nanotechnology, as well as dystopian scenarios of self-replicating devices running amok and causing global catastrophe. Largely a future possibility rather than present actuality, nanotechnology has become a potent cultural signifier. NanoCulture explores the ways in which nanotechnology interacts with, and itself becomes, a cultural construction. Topics include the co-construction of nanoscience and science fiction; the influence of risk assessment and nanotechnology on the shapes of narratives; intersections between nanoscience as a writing practice and experimental literature at the limits of fabrication; the Alice-in-Wonderland metaphor for nanotechnology; and the effects of mediation on nanotechnology and electronic literature. NanoCulture is produced in collaboration with the nano art exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (December 2003-September 2004), created by an interdisciplinary team led by media artist Victoria Vesna and nanoscientist James Gimzewski. NanoCulture is richly illustrated with images from the nano exhibit, which also provides the basis for an ethnographic analysis of collaborative process and an exploration of changing concepts of museum space. more...

Nanoelectronics and Photonics
By: Korkin, Anatoli (ed.); Rosei, Federico (ed.)
Published by: Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

Nanoelectronics and Photonics: From Atoms to Materials, Devices, and Architectures provides a description of the core elements and challenges of advanced and future information technology. Tutorial chapters from leaders in the field cover fundamental topics ranging from materials to devices to system architecture. By linking the materials physics and chemistry at the atomic scale with device and circuit design and performance requirements, the book presents a coherent picture of theoretical and experimental research efforts and technology development in this highly interdisciplinary area. Short visionary articles by Nicolaas Bloembergen, Nobel Laureate in Physics (1981), Konstantin Likharev, distinguished professor at Stony Brook University, and Stanley Williams, senior fellow and director of the Quantum Science Research group at Hewlett-Packard, offer unique perspectives and insights. Nanoelectronics and Photonics is essential reading for researchers and graduate students in materials science, device physics, and electrical and computer engineering. Key Features: Provides an authoritative overview of the current status and future trends of nanoelectronics and photonics Presents broad-ranging tutorials on both theoretical and experimental aspects of key topics in nanotechnology Written by recognized international experts in each area Addresses the needs of both graduate students and nanotechnology a oegurusa more...

Nanomaterials for Application in Medicine and Biology
By: Giersig, Michael (ed.); Khomutov, Gennady B. (ed.)
Published by: Springer

The wide range of possibilities as well as the increasing importance of nanomaterials in medicine has become apparent in today's world. This book unites the multi-faceted work of international scientists from the domains of physics, chemistry, and biomedicine, as they cooperate to present the role and application of such nanomaterials in modern medicine with particular emphasis on cell growth, manipulation, and modification. Not only does this book provide the reader with the necessary theoretical background information, it also gives valuable experimental data, thus allowing for an exact comprehension and observation of the relevance of this modern technology which will be encountered more and more frequently in future biomedicine. more...

Nanoparticle Assemblies and Superstructures
By: Kotov, Nicholas
Published by: CRC Press

The nanoworld menagerie now displays rings, cubes, tetrapods, triangular prisms, acorns, centipedes, shells, whiskers, and other exotic constructions. The rationale of the studies here is that the time has come to shift focus from making the wee shapes to organizing them into structures of one, two, or three dimensions that might actually be of som more...

Nanoparticles and Occupational Health
By: Maynard, Andrew D. (ed.); Pui, David Y.H (ed.)
Published by: Springer

Nanotechnology is rapidly invading many aspects of modern society - from science, research and engineering to industrial and commercial applications and, inevitably, to man and his environment. One of the biggest challenges, therefore, is managing environmental, health and safety risks of nanomaterials. Yet, the information necessary to assess their long term effects is scarce. Systematic research into what potentially makes engineered nanomaterials hazardous, how this translates into risk, and how these can be managed will be vital and involves interdisciplinary collaboration. The first International Symposium on Nanotechnology and Occupational Health, in 2004, brought together hygienists, manufacturers, toxicologists, materials scientists, regulators and researchers. It pointed the way to what needs to be done. The second International Symposium, 2005, Minneapolis, Minnesota, demonstrated the power and potential where there is a will: with nearly three times as many attendants, and with contributions from academics, industry, policymakers, non-government organizations and even lawyers, this second symposium established that, while there is international concern over how to ensure safe nanotech-workplaces, there is also progress being made in developing the required knowledge. This volume, a reprint from a special issue of the Journal of Nanoparticle Research, mainly draws from work presented at the 2005 symposium, diverse but united by the need for a holistic view of nanotechnology and risk. more...
