Handbook of Dynamical Systems
By: Hasselblatt, B. (ed.); Katok, A. (ed.)
Published by: Elsevier Science

Contains surveys on subjects in four areas of dynamical systems: hyperbolic dynamics, parabolic dynamics, ergodic theory and infinite-dimensional dynamical systems (partial differential equations). This work covers the ergodic theory including chapters that discuss partial differential equations from the point of view of dynamical systems. more...

Handbook of Dynamical Systems
By: Fiedler, B.
Published by: North Holland

This handbook is volume II in a series collecting mathematical state-of-the-art surveys in the field of dynamical systems. Much of this field has developed from. interactions with other areas of science, and this volume shows how concepts of dynamical systems further the understanding of mathematical issues that arise in applications. Although modeling issues are addressed, the central theme is the mathematically rigorous investigation of the resulting differential equations and their dynamic behavior. However, the authors and editors have made an effort to ensure readability on a non-technical level for mathematicians from other fields and for other scientists and engineers. The eighteen surveys collected here do not aspire to encyclopedic completeness, but present selected paradigms. The surveys are grouped into those emphasizing finite-dimensional methods, numerics, topological methods, and partial differential equations. Application areas include the dynamics of neural networks, fluid flows, nonlinear optics, and many others. While the survey articles can be read independently, they deeply share recurrent themes from dynamical systems. Attractors, bifurcations, center manifolds, dimension reduction, ergodicity, homoclinicity, hyperbolicity, invariant and inertial manifolds, normal forms, recurrence, shift dynamics, stability, to name. just a few, are ubiquitous dynamical concepts throughout the articles. more...

Handbook of Dynamical Systems
By: Hasselblatt, B.; Katok, A.
Published by: North Holland

Volumes 1A and 1B. These volumes give a comprehensive survey of dynamics written by specialists in the various subfields of dynamical systems. The presentation attains coherence through a major introductory survey by the editors that organizes the entire subject, and by ample cross-references between individual surveys. The volumes are a valuable resource for dynamicists seeking to acquaint themselves with other specialties in the field, and to mathematicians active in other branches of mathematics who wish to learn about contemporary ideas and results dynamics. Assuming only general mathematical knowledge the surveys lead the reader towards the current state of research in dynamics. Volume 1B will appear 2005. more...

Handbook of Exact Solutions for Ordinary Differential Equations
By: Polyanin, Andrei
Published by: CRC Press

The focus of this handbook is on equations encountered in applications and on equations that appear simple but prove particularly difficult to integrate, which makes it a useful addition to the arsenals of mathematicians, scientists, and engineers alike. more...

Handbook of Mathematical Fluid Dynamics
By: Friedlander, S.; Serre, D.
Published by: North Holland

The articles that comprise this volume address a range of topics that concern mathematical fluid dynamics including: the Boltzman equation, collisional kinetic theory, viscous heat conducting compressible fluids and dynamic flows in liquids and vapours. more...

High Order Difference Methods for Time Dependent PDE
By: Gustafsson, Bertil
Published by: Springer

The subject of this book is high order finite difference methods for time dependent PDE. The idea is to give an overview of the basic theory and construction principles by using model examples. The book also contains a general presentation of the techniques and results for well-posedness and stability, with inclusion of the three fundamental methods of analysis both for PDE in its original and discretized form: the Fourier transform, the eneregy method and the Laplace transform. Various types of wave propagation problems are treated in specific detail since high order methods are particularly effective for these problems. more...

Higher-Order Finite Element Methods
By: Solin, Pavel; Segeth, Karel; Dolezel, Ivo
Published by: Chapman & Hall/CRC

Higher-Order Finite Element Methods provides an exhaustive survey of intrinsic techniques and practical implementation of higher-order finite element schemes. It addresses automatic hp-adaptivity in one- and two-spatial dimensions, and includes up-to-date references to ongoing research related to automatic hp-adaptivity in 3D. The authors' discussion of suitable data structures and efficient linear solvers provides an excellent introduction to key, often neglected aspects of this class of methods. Avoiding heavy mathematical jargon where possible, the book is written in a clear and comprehensive way for both applied mathematicians and engineers who are interested in finite elements. more...

Hyperbolic Conservation Laws and the Compensated Compactness Method
By: Lu, Yunguang
Published by: CRC Press

In this text for a one-year course for graduate students in applied mathematics and for undergraduates in their last year, central ideas and recent advances in the method of compensated compactness as a technique for studying hyperbolic conservation laws are explained. Beginning with an account of underlying ideas, the text develops applications in more...

Hyperbolic Problems - Theory, Numerics, Applications
By: Benzoni-Gavage, Sylvie (ed.); Serre, Denis (ed.)
Published by: Springer

This volume contains papers that were presented at HYP2006, the eleventh international Conference on Hyperbolic Problems: Theory, Numerics and Applications held at the Ecole Normale Sup??rieure de Lyon, France, July 17-21, 2006. This biennial series of conferences has become one of the most important international events in Applied Mathematics. As computers became more and more powerful, the interplay between theory, modelling, and numerical algorithms gained considerable impact, and the scope of HYP conferences expanded accordingly. The field is currently in interaction with a variety of scientific domains, including fluid dynamics, physics, electromagnetism, chemistry, biology, road and network traffic, and engineering. Many of these papers present new effective numerical methods and their application in various contexts. more...
