Fateful Harvest
By: Wilson, Duff
Published by: Harper Collins
I see soil in a new light, and I wonder about my own lawn and garden. What have I sprinkled on my backyard? Is somebody using my home, my food, to recycle toxic waste? It seems unbelievable, outlandish -- but what if it's true?. A riveting exposé, Fateful Harvest tells the story of Patty Martin -- the mayor of a small Washington town called Quincy -- who discovers American industries are dumping toxic waste into farmers' fields and home gardens by labeling it "fertilizer." She becomes outraged at the failed crops, sick horses, and rare diseases in her town, as well as the threats to her children's health. Yet, when she blows the whistle on a nationwide problem, Patty Martin is nearly run out of town. Duff Wilson, whose Seattle Times series on this story was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, provides the definitive account of a new and alarming environmental scandal. Fateful Harvest is a gripping study of corruption and courage, of recklessness and reckoning. It is a story that speaks to the greatest fears -- and ultimate hope -- in us all.

By-catch Reduction in the World's Fisheries
By: Kennelly, Steven J. (ed.)
Published by: Springer
This book comes after several decades of outstanding and successful research that has helped ameliorate some of the most important and controversial fisheries issues in the world ? those associated with the unwanted wastage of fish from by-catch and discarding. The 8 chapters encompass contributions from 27 of the world's leading experts in by-catch reduction. They take the reader through most aspects of the field at a variety of scales and viewpoints. They examine the methodologies used to develop by-catch reduction techniques and provide new avenues for assisting and broadening such work. Case studies are provided that encompass most of the world's fishing techniques and regions. Solutions developed for the most problematic fishing methods in terms of by-catch, selectivity and habitat damage are examined in significant detail in addition to ways to reduce the by-catch of charismatic species like marine mammals and sea-birds. By-catch reduction in less infamous fishing methods is also examined with chapters on recreational fishing and trapping. The book shows how the lessons learned in reducing by-catch can be applied to ameliorate emerging, broader issues concerning the impacts of fishing on entire ecosystems. Finally, the book examines the most vital phase of by-catch reduction work - its uptake and extension into fishing practices. This book will prove an invaluable tool for any fisheries professional or lay person interested in by-catch reduction or, indeed, anyone trying to resolve a particular by-catch problem in their fishery.

Casebook on EU Environmental Law
By: Kramer, Ludwig
Published by: Hart Publishing, Ltd
This book comments on fifty key judgments which the Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance have given on European Community environmental law. For each judgment, the facts and procedures are described, followed by an extract of the essential parts of the judgment and a commentary which places the judgment in its legal, environmental and political context and develops the lines of reasoning of the Court. The fifty cases selected cover all substantive and procedural aspects of Community environmental law, as regards the provisions of the EC Treaty (cases 1 to 9), horizontal problems (cases 10 to 18), water and air (cases 19 to 25), products and noise (cases 26 to 32), nature protection (cases 33 to 38), waste management (cases 39 to 45) and procedural questions (cases 46 to 50). Particular emphasis is laid on commenting on recent judgments: thus, the oldest case discussed dates from 1991 and 43 of the 50 judgments date from 1996 or later. The book provides a clear insight into the jurisdiction of the European Courts; it will be of particular use to practitioners of national and Community environmental law, researchers, law students and administrators. It is written in a comprehensible style which also makes it a useful tool for non-lawyers who deal with European Community environmental law and policy.

Constitutionalism, Multilevel Trade Governance and Social Regulation
By: Joerges, Christian (ed.); Petersmann, Ernst-Ulrich (ed.)
Published by: Hart Publishing, Ltd
This is a book about the ever more complex legal networks of transnational economic governance structures and their legitimacy problems. It takes up the challenge of the editors' earlier pioneering works which have called for more cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary analyses by scholars of international law, European and international economic law, private international law, international relations theory and social philosophy to examine the interdependences of multilevel governance in transnational economic, social, environmental and legal relations. Two complementary strands of theorising are expounded. One argues that globalisation and the universal recognition of human rights are transforming the intergovernmental 'society of states' into a cosmopolitan community of citizens which requires more effective constitutional safeguards for protecting human rights and consumer welfare in the national and international governance and legal regulation of international trade. The second emphasises the dependence of the functioning of international markets and liberal trade on governance arrangements which respond credibly to safety and environmental concerns of consumers, traders, political and non-governmental actors. Enquiries into the generation of international standards and empirical analyses of legalization and judizialisation practices form part of this agenda. The perspectives and conclusions of the more than 20 contributors from Europe and North-America cannot be uniform. But they converge in their search for a constitutional architecture which limits, empowers and legitimises multilevel trade governance, as well as in their common premise that respect for human rights, private and democratic self-government and social justice require more transparent, participatory and deliberative forms of transnational 'cosmopolitan democracy'.
