Traffic and Transport Psychology
By: Underwood, Geoffrey
Published by: Elsevier Science
Just as our transport systems become more and more important to our economic and social well-being, so they become more and more crowded and more at risk from congestion, disruption, and collapse. Technology and engineering can provide part of the solution, but the complete solution will need to take account of the behaviour of the users of the transport networks. The role of psychologists in this is to understand how people make decisions about the alternative modes of transport and about the alternative routes to their destinations, to understand how novice and other vulnerable users can develop safe and effective behaviours, how competent users can operate within the transport system optimally and within their perceptual and cognitive limitations. The contributions to this volume address these issues of how the use of our transport systems can be improved by taking into account knowledge of the behaviour of the people who use the systems. Topics discussed include driver training and licensing, driver impairment, road user attitudes and behaviour, enforcement and behaviour change, driver support systems, and the psychology of mobility and transport mode choice. This work will be of value not only to psychologists but to all transport professionals interested in the application of psychology to traffic.

The Watercooler Effect
By: DiFonzo, Nicholas
Published by: Avery
A deeply revealing look at why we spread rumors, why we believe them, and how they affect our behavior. During the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, rumors were flying about stranded residents shooting rescue workers. In New York City, the Brooklyn Bottling Groups business was devastated by false rumors that its soda contained sterilizers. Psychologist Nicholas DiFonzo has studied hearsay for more than fifteen years, and in this book he shows that the process that gave rise to these troubling rumors is fundamentally the same as a tete-a`-tete around the company watercooler. Why are rumors a ubiquitous aspect of the human experience whether theyre about plots to wipe out the urban poor through sterilizers or a companys plan to downsize? Armed with entertaining examples from all spheres of life, DiFonzo asserts that rumors are a window into both individual and group psychology. DiFonzo ultimately argues that rumors stem from our deeply rooted motivation to make sense of the world. As social beings, when confronted with an ambiguous or threatening situation, our response is to talk to one anotherwhether at the dinner table, on the Web, or around the watercooler.

When Your Mind Is Clear, the Sun Shines All the Time
By: Maschio, Jill
Published by: Electronic & Database Publishing, Inc.
By learning the skills presented in this book and how to apply them, you can increase your knowledge so that overcoming depression is within reach. This self-help book is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to learn to improve their life. The author brings a refreshing perspective to the problem of depression. A central focus of this self-help book is to help you improve your thinking skills so that life can be more manageable. Maschio teaches that through education, victims of depression can have more power to win the battle over it. With life being more manageable, you can be in more control to achieve the changes that may lead to your happiness and a more successful life. Having battled with her own affliction of depression, Maschio shares her personal battle and how she came to face it and overcame it solely through education. This book shows you how the lack of education of certain thinking skills can cause a spiraling effect of absolute or emotional thinking, which once learned to rely upon, limits our thoughts from being productive and positive. Thus, we stop experiencing growth and from reaching our full potential, which can lead to depression. Learning the skills takes knowledge and practice to develop, which is not taught in many schools and available in only a limited number of college programs. The author passes this knowledge and skills on to you. This workbook stands out from other books for overcoming depression because the models, skills, and concepts taught are woven into a systematic fashion that make the walk through overcoming depression easy to follow. The author walks you through each phase so that you may progress successfully to overcome depression. The aspects of depression are explained on a level that any mature reader can easily understand.
