Chronologisches Wörterbuch des deutschen Wortschatzes
By: Seebold, Elmar
Published by: Walter de Gruyter

In this chronological dictionary, the vocabulary of Old High German is sorted by periods, regions and text-types; in addition, vernacular insertions in Latin texts are registered as far as possible. An evaluation section lists which Old High German words appear in the 9th century at all, and which occur there for the first time. This makes it possible for the vocabulary to be examined and described systematically. more...

Dargestellte Autorschaft
By: Steiner, Felix
Published by: Max Niemeyer Verlag

Academic texts are regarded as impersonal texts. They follow what is known as the “I” taboo. The present study resolves the question of how the “I” is to be seen in academic texts. The concept of the author moves on a multiplicity of levels. On the one hand, typical academic acts (such as “solving a research problem”) are continually being explicated, on the other, typical attitudes are also being indicated (such as uncertainty). In the model, the marking levels are integrated. Thus the ‘author in the text‚ can be determined both as typical of a domain and as an individual figure. more...

Das Ende Des Anthropozentrismus
By: Streim, Gregor
Published by: Walter de Gruyter

In German literature and philosophy of the 1930s and 1940s we encounter recurrent images and modes of thought of an ahistoric existence. There were attempts to turn away from modern rationalism and re-think "Man" as a being not determined by intellect, history, or nature. The present study is the first to reconstruct this discourse. In doing so, it opens up new windows on the development of the history of German literature and thought from the end of the Weimar Republic until the early years of the Federal Republic of Germany and on the works produced during this time. more...

Deklinationsklassen-Wandel
By: Kürschner, Sebastian
Published by: Walter de Gruyter

This study is concerned with the history of declension classes in four Germanic languages - German, Dutch, Swedish and Danish. Using many examples and schematic illustrations, the study illuminates the development of the typological variety in the Germanic languages from a contrastive perspective. more...

Der mittelalterliche Tristan-Stoff in Skandinavien
By: Uecker, Heiko (ed.)
Published by: Walter de Gruyter

The tale of Tristan and Isolde is one of the great European love stories. Based on material from Celtic sagas, it was given literary form in all European vernaculars in the Middle Ages. In Northern Europe, a French version was translated into Old Norwegian in 1226; this is of great significance, as the French source text by Thomas de Bretagne has been nearly completely lost. The Old Norwegian Tristrams saga was the starting point for a series of re-workings of the material ? an independent Icelandic version together with numerous popular ballads from Denmark, Iceland and the Faroes. All of these texts are gathered here in translation ? some of them for the first time. more...

Der Ritterspiegel
By: Rothe, Johannes; Huber, Christoph (ed.)
Published by: Walter de Gruyter

Johannes Rothe's Ritterspiegel [Mirror of Chivalry] with its 4108 verses is the most comprehensive medieval knightly primer in German. In all probability it was written for young nobles in the context of Rothe's work as school head in Eisenach from 1414. Apart from its significance for the history of literature as a didactic poem, the work provides a rich source of information on the cultural and legal history of chivalry which focuses the traditional characteristics of the model of social estates on the situation in the 15th century. Rothe's concept of virtuous nobility implies social mobility, i.e. promotion or demotion within the hierarchy of estates. The following are explicated: a history of chivalry, the right to bear arms and seven privileges of the estate, rules on combat and warfare, these being oriented in either a moralising Christian or a purely practical direction, tasks of an army commander, the significance of astrology. The Thuringian text has been newly edited and translated on the basis of the Cassel manuscript; the commentary resolves linguistic issues and historical references and elucidates the source materials for the work. more...
