Antisense Technology, Part A, General Methods, Methods of Delivery, and RNA Studies
By: Phillips, Ian M.; Abelson, John N.; Simon, Melvin I.
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

Antisense technology is the ability to manipulate gene expression within mammalian cells providing powerful experimental approaches for the study of gene function and gene regulation. For example, methods that inhibit gene expression permit studies which probe the normal function of a specific product within a cell. Such methodology can be used in many disciplines such as pharmacology, oncology, genetics, cell biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and neurosciences. This volume will be a truly important tool in biomedical-oriented research. The critically acclaimed laboratory standard for more than forty years, Methods in Enzymology is one of the most highly respected publications in the field of biochemistry. Since 1955, each volume has been eagerly awaited, frequently consulted, and praised by researchers and reviewers alike. Now with more than 300 volumes (all of them still in print), the series contains much material still relevant today--truly an essential publication for researchers in all fields of life sciences. more...

Apoptosis
By: Reed, John C.; Abelson, John N.; Simon, Melvin I.
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

Volume 322 of Methods in Enzymology is dedicated to apoptosis. Major topics covered include measuring apoptosis and apoptosis-induced endonucleases, measuring apoptosis in lower organisms, proteases involved in apoptosis and their inhibitors, cell free systems for monitoring steps in apoptosis pathways, mitochondria and apoptosis, bCl-2 family proteins, and studying receptors and signal transduction events implicated in cell survival and cell death. The critically acclaimed laboratory standard for more than forty years, Methods in Enzymology is one of the most highly respected publications in the field of biochemistry. Arsenic in Soil and Groundwater Environment
By: Bhattacharya, Prosum (ed.); Mukherjee, Arun B. (ed.); Zevenhoven, Ron (ed.); Bundschuh, Jochen (ed.); Loeppert, Richard H. (ed.)
Published by: Elsevier Science

This volume presents the recent developments in the field of arsenic in soil and groundwater. Arranged into nine sections, the text emphasizes the global occurrences of arsenic in the environment, particularly on its source, pathways, behavior, and effects it has on soils, plants, water, animals, and humans. It also covers the diverse issues of arsenic in the mining environment, arsenic emanating from hydrothermal springs, and the geochemical modeling of arsenic adsorption to oxide surfaces. Finally, the text includes different cost effective removal mechanisms of arsenic from drinking water using natural red earth, solar oxidation, and arsenic oxidation by ferrrate. more...

Atomic and Molecular Photoabsorption
By: Berkowitz, Joseph
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

Atomic and Molecular Photoabsorption, Volume 1 describes and catalogs available spectral information relevant to how common gases interact with sunlight and other sources of electromagnetic radiation such as x-rays, flames, and plasmas. Photoabsorption is light's reduction in intensity and force when it passes through a column of gas or liquid. This book also includes a large number of data tables and figures that are invaluable to researchers because they help them select exactly which wavelengths to use in their experiments. The further distinguishing aspect of this book is its synthesis across a broad spectrum of wavelengths and compilation of data for a large number of atoms and molecules. more...

ATPases
By: Lee, A.G.
Published by: Elsevier Science

Volume 5 of Biomembranes covers an important group of membrane proteins, the ATPases. The P-type ATPases couple the hydrolysis of ATP to the movement of ions across a membrane and are characterized by the formation of a phosphoyrlated intermediate. Included are the plasma membrane and muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ -ATPases, the (Na+ -K+) -ATPase, the gastric (H+ -K+) -ATPase, the plasma membrane H+ -ATPase of fungi and plants, the Mg2+ - transport ATPase, the Salmonella typhimurium, and the K+ -ATPase of Escherichia coli, KdpB. The other important classes of ATPase in eukaryotic systems are the vacuolar H+ -ATPases and the F0F1 ATP synthase, and, in bacteria, the anion-translocating ATPases, responsible for resistance to arsenicals and antimonials, and the (Na+ -Mg2+) -ATPase of Acholeplasma. Finally, eukaryotic systems contain a variety of ectonucleotidases important, for example, in hydrolysis of extracellular ATP released as a cotransmitter from cholinergic and adrenergic nerve terminals. Volume 5 of Biomembranes explores structure-function relationships for these mebrane-bound ATPases. more...
