Medical Decisions, Estrogen and Aging
By: Schulkin, Jay
Published by: Springer

The decision making process that underlies ovarian hormone therapy (HT) is fallible. The question is whether or not physicians should suggest; should one take estrogen or progestin or some other combination of related hormones to women during the menopausal period, when women are deciding about whether to go on hormone therapy for diverse reasons. This decision affects many women in this country and around the world, and is an important factor serving to show what forces influence medical decision-making. Two recent large-scale studies, one here (Women??'s Health Initiative or WHI) and the other in Great Britain, cast a negative light on the use of hormone therapy. Both have received considerable attention in the media. Thus, the decision for women to go on hormone therapy (HT) remains controversial. There is an historical oscillation of beliefs related in part to expectations of the medicinal value of HT over longer-term use beyond the initial peri-menonpausal period. Studies thought to resolve issues surrounding the efficacy of HT were perhaps over-stated. Confusion still permeates the decision making with regard to HT. Over zealous advertising, and exaggerated understanding of the results (negative or positive) undermines patient and physician decision making. more...

Membrane Lipid Signaling in Aging and Age-Related Disease
By: Mattson, Mark P. (ed.)
Published by: Elsevier Science

The lipids of cellular membranes not only serve roles in controlling the structure and fluidity of the membrane, but are increasingly recognized for their roles as signalling molecules and modifiers of membrane protein function. Recent studies described in this volume reveal striking changes in membrane lipids during aging and in age-related diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative disorders. Lipids including inositol phospholipids, cholesterol, sphingolipids and ceramides play important roles in signalling cellular responses to stress and specific stimuli such as growth factors, cytokines and neurotransmitters. One or more of these lipid mediators has been linked to the pathogenesis of age-related diseases. This book provides a comprehensive review of specific membrane lipid mediators and their roles in aging and age-related disease. more...

Mild Stress and Healthy Aging
By: Bourg, Eric Le (ed.); Rattan, Suresh I.S. (ed.)
Published by: Springer

Stress is a double edged sword. Whereas chronic stress has well known harmful effects, recent research shows that intermittent exposure of cells and organisms to mild stress can improve various biological parameters, including severe stress tolerance, health span and longevity. Mild stress-induced hormesis is potentially a powerful tool in gerontological research and interventions. This book brings together some of the world leaders in this area of research who present a critical analysis of the ongoing research with respect to the effects and mechanisms of action of various types of mild stress, such as irradiation, heat, physical exercise, hypergravity, pro-oxidants and nutritional components, on a variety of biological systems ranging from fruitflies to human cells and bodies. Their separate chapters and a final collective chapter open up a whole new world of possibilities for future research in aging, successful aging, and health span extension. more...
