Circle-valued Morse Theory
By: Pajitnov, Andrei
Published by: Walter de Gruyter

In 1927, M Morse discovered that the number of critical points of a smooth function on a manifold is closely related to the topology of the manifold. This became a starting point of the Morse theory. This book aims to give a systematic treatment of the geometric foundations of a subfield of that topic, the circle-valued Morse functions. more...

Classification des Groupes Algébriques Semi-simples
By: Cartier, Pierre (ed.)
Published by: Springer

The third volume of the Collected Works of Claude Chevalley assembles his work on semi-simple algebraic groups contained, for the most part, in the notes of the famous "Sminaire Chevalley" held at the Ecole Normale Suprieure in Paris between 1956 and 1958 and written up by participants of the seminar namely, P. Cartier, A. Grothendieck, R. Lazard and J. L. Verdier. These texts have been entirely reset in TeX for this edition, and edited and annotated by Pierre Cartier. Almost 50 years after the original writing, these texts still constitute a choice reference from which to enter and learn this part of the theory of algebraic groups. more...

CliffsStudySolverTM Geometry
By: Herzog, David Alan
Published by: John Wiley & Sons, Inc

Intended for students enrolled in general geometry courses at either the high school or college levels, CliffsStudySolver Geometry offers topical overviews of geometry and a wealth of challenging problems. The pretest section of the book lets readers gauge their knowledge of geometry and directs them to the areas they need to concentrate on. Chapters include explanatory problems and solutions throughout, and the workbook provides a complete sample exam that covers all the fundamental areas of geometry. more...

Codes on Euclidean Spheres
By: Ericson, T.; Zinoviev, V.
Published by: North Holland

Codes on Euclidean spheres are often referred to as spherical codes. They are of interest from mathematical, physical and engineering points of view. Mathematically the topic belongs to the realm of algebraic combinatorics, with close connections to number theory, geometry, combinatorial theory, and - of course - to algebraic coding theory. The connections to physics occur within areas like crystallography and nuclear physics. In engineering spherical codes are of central importance in connection with error-control in communication systems. In that context the use of spherical codes is often referred to as "coded modulation.". The book offers a first complete treatment of the mathematical theory of codes on Euclidean spheres. Many new results are published here for the first time. Engineering applications are emphasized throughout the text. The theory is illustrated by many examples. The book also contains an extensive table of best known spherical codes in dimensions 3-24, including exact constructions. more...

Compactifications of Symmetric and Locally Symmetric Spaces
By: Borel, Armand; Ji, Lizhen
Published by: Springer

Noncompact symmetric and locally symmetric spaces naturally appear in many mathematical theories, including analysis (representation theory, nonabelian harmonic analysis), number theory (automorphic forms), algebraic geometry (modulae) and algebraic topology (cohomology of discrete groups). In most applications, it is necessary to form an appropriate compactification of the space. The literature dealing with such compactifications is vast. The main purpose of this book is to introduce uniform constructions of most of the known compactifications with emphasis on their geometric and topological structures. The book is divided into three parts. Part I studies compactifications of Riemannian symmetric spaces and their arithmetic quotients. Part II is a study of compact smooth manifolds. Part III studies the compactification of locally symmetric spaces. Familiarity with the theory of semisimple Lie groups is assumed, as is familiarity with algebraic groups defined over the rational numbers in later parts of the book, although most of the pertinent material is recalled as presented. Otherwise, the book is a self-contained reference aimed at graduate students and research mathematicians interested in the applications of Lie theory and representation theory to diverse fields of mathematics. more...

Complex Manifolds and Deformation of Complex Structures
By: Kodaira, Kunihiko
Published by: Springer

In this title, the author, who with Spencer created the theory of deformations of a complex manifold, has written a book which should be of service to all who are interested in this by now vast subject. more...

Computational Algebraic Geometry
By: Schenck, Hal; Series, C. M.
Published by: Cambridge University Press

The interplay between algebra and geometry is a beautiful area of mathematical investigation. Recent advances in computing and algorithms make it possible to tackle many classical problems in a down-to-earth and concrete fashion. This opens new vistas and allows us to pose, study and solve problems previously out of reach. more...

Computational Commutative and Non-Commutative Algebraic Geometry
By: S. Cojocaru (ed.); G. Pfister (ed.); V. Ufnarovski (ed.)
Published by: IOS Press

This publication gives a good insight in the interplay between commutative and non-commutative algebraic geometry. The theoretical and computational aspects are the central theme in this study. The topic is looked at from different perspectives in over 20 lecture reports. It emphasizes the current trends in commutative and non-commutative algebraic geometry and algebra. The contributors to this publication present the most recent and state-of-the-art progresses which reflect the topic discussed in this publication. Both researchers and graduate students will find this book a good source of information on commutative and non-commutative algebraic geometry. more...
